WHAT IS PELVIC HEALTH PHYSICAL THERAPY?
Pelvic health is a specialized form of physical therapy that focuses on muscles and tissues associated within and around the pelvis. Advanced training is required to treat the pelvic floor. Pelvic floor dysfunction can contribute or cause disorders of the lumbar spine, sacroiliac joint, tailbone, pubic bone, hips, groin, and abdomen.
The pelvic floor muscles are essential to bladder, bowel and sexual function. This region of the body is often overlooked. Some issues are considered “normal” after childbirth such as leaking urine when laughing or jumping on a trampoline. No, not normal! In fact, preventable with rehab. If you think you may benefit from pelvic health physical therapy, see the list of conditions we treat at PT Lab. Or if you prefer, we are happy to answer questions by phone or email.
DO I NEED A REFERRAL FROM MY DOCTOR?
Typically, you will not need a doctor’s order or referral to obtain physical therapy services at PT Lab. However, each insurance company has different requirements. Call or send us a message and our authorization team will research your benefits to determine if a referral is needed.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT AT MY FIRST VISIT?
Your first visit will include an in-depth look the history of your condition and a physical examination. Pelvic health often includes an internal pelvic floor muscle assessment (with your consent). An internal assessment is not always necessary on the first visit and is, of course, always based on your comfort level. We understand this can be sensitive for women, particularly with a history of sexual trauma.
